Ticket deal’s a Radio-dead loss

RADIOHEAD were left with a raft of empty seats at a recent French gig after a
ticket giveaway proved a dismal failure.

The egghead rockers, known for their right-on eco credentials, came up with a
potty ploy to test our Continental cousins’ commitment to green
issues.

And they were roundly ignored for their troubles.

Singer THOM YORKE and his gang announced that 50 passes were up for
grabs for their show at Paris’s 17,000-capacity Bercy Arena and
would be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The only snag was that punters would have to collect them by BICYCLE from
record label XL’s Paris office.

But, in the land of the 2CV, our French friends were less than keen on the
eco-friendly stunt and XL were left with an ecologically unsound 35
unclaimed tickets on their hands.
That’s the branch of one tree wasted.
A source said: “Radiohead are using their current world tour to
highlight their commitment to green issues.

“They advise all gig-goers to use public transport and are doing all
they can to make their carbon footprint as small as possible.

“Unfortunately the French didn’t appear to share their
noble intentions and roundly ignored the free ticket tactic.”

The stunt may have flopped but I admire the stand the band are taking on the
environment.
Clearly, if we all keep going at the current rate there’ll only
be Fake Plastic Trees left . . .

Al Green - Lifetime Achievement Prize For Singer Al Green

Soul legend Al Green is to receive a lifetime achievement prize at an award ceremony honouring black artists.

The Let's Stay Together star is to given the honour at the Black Entertainment TV (BET) awards in Los Angeles on June 24th while R 'n' B singer T-Pain is the most nominated artist, featuring in five categories.

The Buy U A Drank performer dominates the best collaboration category, featuring on three of the nominated tracks, namely Kanye West's Good Life, Flo Rida's Low and Chris Brown's Kiss Kiss.

His partnership with Brown is also up for the viewers' choice award while the video for Good Life is up against songs from Ashanti, Mary J Blige, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys and UGF featuring Outkast.

According to BET executive vice president Stephen Hill, T-Pain "is everywhere".

"He's got five nominations, none of them for his own work," he was quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying.

"He's had a great year; he's introduced a new element," he added, in reference to T-Pain's trademark synthesised vocals.

The success of British singer Estelle's American Boy, which features a rapped cameo from West, looks to have translated across the Atlantic, with the 1980 star nominated in the best new artist category, alongside Flo Rida, Chrisette Michelle, The Dream and Soulja Boy.

West himself is nominated in three categories, include the best male hip-hop artist listing, in which he faces stiff competition from mentor Jay- and protege Common, as well as Lil Wayne and Snoop.

"Besides being the best black awards show that we have, also being one of the best awards show period, their ratings are through the roof," said Nelly, who like Mariah Carey and Blige, is set to perform on the night.

"They're tuning in - black, white, Japanese, Chinese - you got it, they're tuning in, which says a lot."

Kanye West, record labels sued over jazz samples

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rappers Kanye West, Method Man, Redman, Common and their record companies were sued on Thursday by late U.S. jazz musician Joe Farrell's daughter, who accused them of using her father's music without approval.

The lawsuit, filed by Kathleen Firrantello in the U.S. District Court in New York, names the rappers along with various labels owned by Universal Music Group./

None of the record companies or representatives for the rappers were immediately available for comment.

The lawsuit said all the rappers used portions of Farrell's 1974 musical composition "Upon This Rock" in three separate songs -- West in "Gone," Common in "Chi-City" and Method Man and Redman in their song "Run 4 Cover."

Firrantello is seeking punitive damages of at least $1 million and asked that no further copies of the songs be made, sold or performed, according to the lawsuit.
