Ticket deal’s a Radio-dead loss

RADIOHEAD were left with a raft of empty seats at a recent French gig after a
ticket giveaway proved a dismal failure.

The egghead rockers, known for their right-on eco credentials, came up with a
potty ploy to test our Continental cousins’ commitment to green
issues.

And they were roundly ignored for their troubles.

Singer THOM YORKE and his gang announced that 50 passes were up for
grabs for their show at Paris’s 17,000-capacity Bercy Arena and
would be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The only snag was that punters would have to collect them by BICYCLE from
record label XL’s Paris office.

But, in the land of the 2CV, our French friends were less than keen on the
eco-friendly stunt and XL were left with an ecologically unsound 35
unclaimed tickets on their hands.
That’s the branch of one tree wasted.
A source said: “Radiohead are using their current world tour to
highlight their commitment to green issues.

“They advise all gig-goers to use public transport and are doing all
they can to make their carbon footprint as small as possible.

“Unfortunately the French didn’t appear to share their
noble intentions and roundly ignored the free ticket tactic.”

The stunt may have flopped but I admire the stand the band are taking on the
environment.
Clearly, if we all keep going at the current rate there’ll only
be Fake Plastic Trees left . . .

Al Green - Lifetime Achievement Prize For Singer Al Green

Soul legend Al Green is to receive a lifetime achievement prize at an award ceremony honouring black artists.

The Let's Stay Together star is to given the honour at the Black Entertainment TV (BET) awards in Los Angeles on June 24th while R 'n' B singer T-Pain is the most nominated artist, featuring in five categories.

The Buy U A Drank performer dominates the best collaboration category, featuring on three of the nominated tracks, namely Kanye West's Good Life, Flo Rida's Low and Chris Brown's Kiss Kiss.

His partnership with Brown is also up for the viewers' choice award while the video for Good Life is up against songs from Ashanti, Mary J Blige, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys and UGF featuring Outkast.

According to BET executive vice president Stephen Hill, T-Pain "is everywhere".

"He's got five nominations, none of them for his own work," he was quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying.

"He's had a great year; he's introduced a new element," he added, in reference to T-Pain's trademark synthesised vocals.

The success of British singer Estelle's American Boy, which features a rapped cameo from West, looks to have translated across the Atlantic, with the 1980 star nominated in the best new artist category, alongside Flo Rida, Chrisette Michelle, The Dream and Soulja Boy.

West himself is nominated in three categories, include the best male hip-hop artist listing, in which he faces stiff competition from mentor Jay- and protege Common, as well as Lil Wayne and Snoop.

"Besides being the best black awards show that we have, also being one of the best awards show period, their ratings are through the roof," said Nelly, who like Mariah Carey and Blige, is set to perform on the night.

"They're tuning in - black, white, Japanese, Chinese - you got it, they're tuning in, which says a lot."

Kanye West, record labels sued over jazz samples

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rappers Kanye West, Method Man, Redman, Common and their record companies were sued on Thursday by late U.S. jazz musician Joe Farrell's daughter, who accused them of using her father's music without approval.

The lawsuit, filed by Kathleen Firrantello in the U.S. District Court in New York, names the rappers along with various labels owned by Universal Music Group./

None of the record companies or representatives for the rappers were immediately available for comment.

The lawsuit said all the rappers used portions of Farrell's 1974 musical composition "Upon This Rock" in three separate songs -- West in "Gone," Common in "Chi-City" and Method Man and Redman in their song "Run 4 Cover."

Firrantello is seeking punitive damages of at least $1 million and asked that no further copies of the songs be made, sold or performed, according to the lawsuit.

Vera dies on Coronation St tonight

One of 'Coronation Street's most-loved characters, Vera Duckworth, will die during tonight's double episode.
Viewers will see husband Jack (Bill Tarmey) distraught as Vera's (Liz Dawn) body is taken away by funeral directors.
Details of how Vera dies have been a closely guarded secret; three different endings were written and the character's final scenes were shot amidst tight security.
Actress Dawn, who suffers from the lung disease emphysema, decided to leave the show to spend more time with her husband, children and grandchildren.
She has appeared in more than 3,000 'Coronation Street' episodes over the past 33 years.
Commenting on leaving the show, she said: "It was very emotional filming Vera's death scenes but I do think it is the right decision for the character.  I have had 33 marvellous years in 'Coronation Street' and will miss everyone very much."
Her co-star Tarmey said: "Liz is a wonderful woman. I have worked with her for 29 years and we have never had a cross word. She only left a few weeks ago but already I miss walking on set and seeing her there, I miss working with her - we all do. But we wish her all the love in the world and want her to enjoy her retirement, she deserves it."

Hollywood writers are back at work

Hollywood screenwriters have voted to end their three-month-long strike over new media royalties, bringing an end to the US entertainment industry's most damaging dispute for 20 years.
The dispute forced the postponement or cancellation of television shows and films, and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in losses.
The strike also led to the cancellation of the Golden Globes awards ceremony.
The back-to-work order was back by 92.5% of Writers Guild of America members and followed union leaders' endorsement of their contract settlement with the studios.
Members of the guild will vote at a later date on a proposed three-year contract, which would give writers new payments for work streamed on the internet and double the money they earn for TV shows and films resold as downloads. The contract would also cover made-for-web content.

Unlike many of the colder-sounding tunes that are predominant in electronica medicine, Halou's level-headed is infused with plenty of emotion thanks to Rebecca Coseboom's vocals. She is a arrant foil for the compositions of her married man, Ryan Coseboom. The couple started compounding their talents in Santa Cruz, CA, in 1992. They migrated various age by and by to San Francisco and first formed a chemical group called Anymore. Their first recording under the advert Halou, We Only Love You, was issued through Bedazzled, a label that presently folded. Because of the label's demise and a want of enough dispersion, We Only Love You went virtually nowhere, despite goodish critical praise and credence by indie radiocommunication. Halou's side by side album, Wiser, constitute a home at Nettwerk Records and the label issued the release in 2001. The songs on Wiser retained their electronic foundation, but added a kink with the introduction of drums, an acoustic double bass, and a violoncello. Halou's sophomore album first Baron Marks of Broughton the first show of Count with the chemical group. He plays drums and co-produced the discharge, and he also performed the duties of mixer and locomotive engineer. He erstwhile utilized his skills on recordings by New Order, Blackalicious, Deep Blue Something, Philip Steir, Run-D.M.C., and No Doubt.

Tone-Loc Responds To Scam With Two Club Shows

Tone-Loc is making good on two club shows that were booked by a man posing as the performer's manager, according to the Detroit Free Press. The man, who said his name was Robert Jennings, received $400 from the Red Dog Saloon in Milford, MI, for the bogus concert. The man also scammed $1,000 out of Judy Johnson of Bumpers Bar & Grill, located in Westland, MI, which is on the west side of Detroit.

The two clubs realized they were both scammed through the grapevine of local bar owners. Once their stories were compared, the club owners called Bobby Bessone, Tone-Loc's real manger of eight years. Bessone reportedly said when Loc heard of the scams, he offered to play the shows for his regular fee.

The 100-capacity Red Dog welcomes the performer April 11, while the Bumpers show is April 12.
